Contrary to the so-called "primitive" populations, most of the present populations in the world can be said heterogeneous. They consist in different ethnic groups which interact, co-operating or fighting one another, and not often trying to melt with other groups in order to constitute some culturally united "wholes". Therefore, there are cultural clots, or "communities", often antagonistic, which, for themselves, lay claim to the right to be different, but want to lay down their laws, manners, ideas, and even their religion over all the other communities. Following the second World War, important population movements have increased the gravity of these problems, which seem more and more difficult to solve as the unchecked, or ill-managed immigration, together with the trend to "Worldization", spread. Is the Nation still that "melting pot" in which particularisms come to merge ? Or will violence increase which, beyond the mere identity claim, will change itself into open conflict ? All of these questions are studied in the present book, with the help of the concepts of heterogeneous population, contact, immigration, mixed marriage and acculturation.

A la différence des populations dites "primitives", les populations actuelles sont, pour la plupart, hétérogènes. Elles se composent de divers groupes ethniques en interaction, qui s'opposent ou coopèrent, sans toujours chercher à se fondre les uns dans les autres pour donner naissance à des ensembles culturellement unifiés. Il existe donc des "grumeaux" culturels, des "communautés" souvent antagonistes, qui revendiquent pour elles le droit à la différence, tout en prétendant imposer aux autres leurs moeurs, leurs idées, voire leur religion. Les mouvements de populations qui ont suivi la Seconde Guerre Mondiale ont aggravé ces difficultés - que l'immigration incontrôlée, ou mal maîtrisée, qui s'est intensifiée depuis vingt ans, comme aussi le mouvement actuel vers la "Mondialisation", rendent malaisément solubles. La nation reste-t-elle ce creuset où viennent se fondre les particularismes ? Ou bien la violence ira-t-elle s'intensifiant qui, dépassant la simple revendication identitaire, se transformera en conflit ouvert ? C'est de l'ensemble de ces problèmes que traite le présent ouvrage autour des concepts de population hétérogène, de contact, d'immigration, de mariage mixte et d'acculturation.
