This book tells "the adventure of Productivity". It is not a history of the Productivity policy; it is the story of a young research worker who, appointed to the French Productivity Centre, took a part in the definition and the application of that policy of Economic and social development which was at the root of "the thirty glorious years". As he was in charge of research in the Productivity Department of the General Planning Authority, he, basing himself on the concept of "Intellectual investment", promoted the application of the sciences of man to the study of the problems of Work, Human relations, Ergonomics, Forecasting and Planning. He gave a new impulse to the studies of Economic Psychology, of which he made a general survey in his handbook of 1984. (cf. Paul Albou "Economic Psychology", Presses Universitaires de France, Paris, 1984). Having been enthusiastic and proud of the economic achievements of the French Productivity Centre, he resented very much the giving up of this policy which had been stubbornly fought against by a harmful combination of Liberals and Radicals. He felt that they had made a hateful mess, and he grieved to have, during thirteen years, "ploughed the sea".

Ce livre raconte l'aventure de la Productivité, telle qu'elle fut vécue par l'auteur. Ce n'est pas une histoire de la Productivité, c'est l'histoire d'un jeune chercheur qui, affecté au Commissariat Général à la Productivité, contribua, de 1955 à 1968, à définir et à mettre en oeuvre la politique de développement économique et social qui fut à l'origine des "Trente glorieuses". Chargé de la recherche sociale au Service Productivité du Commissariat Général du Plan, il favorisa, s'appuyant sur le concept d'investissement intellectuel, l'application des sciences de l'homme à l'étude des problèmes du travail, des Relations humaines, de l'ergonomie, de la prévision et de la planification. Il donna une impulsion nouvelle aux recherches de psychologie économique, dont il fit, ultérieurement, la synthèse dans son manuel de 1984 (cf. Paul Albou, "La Psychologie économique", Presses Universitaires de France, Paris, 1984). Parce qu'il avait participé avec enthousiasme à cette "aventure", il fut consterné par l'abandon progressif de cette politique volontariste, victorieusement combattue par la coalition malfaisante des libéraux et des gauchistes. Il eut le sentiment d'un immense gâchis et le regret d'avoir, pendant treize ans, "labouré la mer".
